beau is afraid perfectly touched on the intersection between comedy and horror for me. in the face of tragedy, we can either laugh or be terrified. it reminds me a lot of iasip writing, especially rickety cricket. the degradation of his character is played for laughs, and in some ways, a former priest getting high as balls on the streets is kind of funny, but it’s mostly really tragic and horrific. the guy didn’t do anything wrong and had his entire life ahead of him doing something he was passionate about and it all unraveled at the hands of a group of apathetic psychopaths. before you know it he’s transformed into this disfigured shell of a man and there’s nothing we can do but laugh
